Hello

Julie Normal is one of the rare ondes Martenot performers in the world.
She studied at Strasbourg conservatoire with Christine Ott and Thomas Bloch, major interpretes of this french electronic invention from the twenties.

Julie Pierrejean studied the ondes Martenot for 10 years in Strasbourg conservatoire with Christine Ott and Thomas Bloch, where she graduated in chamber music and in ondes Martenot with unanimous distinction in 2013.

Currently with her ondist activity, she's a bassist, keyboardist and singer in various musical bands, resulting in some fifteen record releases.
She's mostly playing solo and in duo ensembles like Accident du Travail, Volt 245 and Draïek, and composes soundtracks for films and dance performances.

She played live with Phil Minton (Jazz d'Or festival), Rodolphe Burger (Strasbourg opera for Musica festival), Winter Family, Cascadeur, Lily Allen, Broadcast, and inside Olivier Vadrot's  'kiosque électronique' in Paris ( FRAC Ile de France). In 2014 she toured Europe with the american gourous of ambient music Bitchin Bajas (Drag City records).

Since 2009 she plays as a soloist a kind of experimental recital. She performed in Paris (Boule Noire, Palais de Tokyo), Brussels, Milano, Torino, Rome, festivals City Sonics (Belgium), International Film Festival in Rotterdam, Sonorama in Besançon and ISI in Montpellier, Strasbourg cathedral and planetariums around France.

Her first vinyl album was released in 2009 on parisian label Bruit Direct.
London label The Trilogy Tapes then released a tape in 2010 and a LP in 2016.

Les ondes, qu'est-ce que c'est ?

What are the ondes?

Unlike what is often said, the ondes are not an ancestor of synths.
It is one of the first electronic instruments, with oscillators and monophonic.
The uniqueness of this instrument is its 'touche' situated in the little drawer under the keyboard:

The 'touche' enables direct human interpretation in the making of the sound, like any instrument of the orchestra, unlike machines.

It controls the attack and intensity, like the violin bow for example.

The ondist presses the expression touche with the left forefinger and allows the electric power to flow, so he makes music 'taming' electicity.

The right hand controls frequency of the sound, chosing to play on the keyboard which, being mobile, offers the possibility of vibrato, or make the ribbon slide under the keyboard thanks to a little ring on the right forefinger.

The ribbon make glissendi possible, like human voice or a string instrument (Martenot was a great inventor but also a cello player).

All the 300 ondes were made by hand in his atelier in Paris.

The idea of his instrument came to him during WW1, as he was working with radio transmissions and discovered the expressivity potential of electricity. He was indeed moved by 'the purity of vibrations produced by tubes when you vary their intensity with a condenser'.

Martenot shows his first prototype in 1928 at Opera de Paris in front of a stunned audience regarding the' almost unreal purity' of  their sound.

Lover of eastern regions, relaxation enthusiast, Martenot invented the only electronic instrument of the orchestra, able to sing like the voice of an atavic or futuristic human-ghost, still unknown, still open to the most liberated music.

Here is a photo of the 'palme' speaker, designed with his sister after a trip to India:
